2019 THE SIRE
A winemaker-select blend of Petite Sirah, Syrah, Zinfandel and Peloursin, The Sire is named in honor of the prized, champion Suffolk breeding rams grazing the rocky hills that later became our Coble Ranch vineyard.
92 POINTS + EDITORS' CHOICE - Wine Enthusiast "All dark chocolate and blackberry jam, this rich and inviting Petite Sirah blend overflows with ripeness as moderate tannins brace deep fruit flavors and subtle oak spices lend tempting complexity. It's one of three excellent new blends from their hillside vineyards." - Jim Gordon
TASTING NOTES
This dark, intense wine has rich aromas of baking spice, fresh blackberry and bramble fruit. Round and luscious on the palate are bold flavors of mixed berry pie, cocoa and minerality. This well-balanced wine finishes with layers of dark fruit and dark cocoa.
PRODUCTION NOTES
Our Petite Sirah block is planted in the traditional French style, with the Petite Sirah, Primitivo, and Peloursin, vines interspersed throughout the vineyard block. Our winemaker selected Lot 2 for this wine. Our Syrah is only six rows, planted in two different places on the Coble Ranch Vineyard. All four varieties were harvested together in the early morning to maintain a cool temperature for processing. Once arriving at the winery, we used our optical sorter to process and select the highest quality grapes and then co-fermented the varieties.
The must was cold-soaked in one-ton fermenters for several days before inoculating with yeast that accentuates the rich fruit flavors of these varieties. The wine was then aged in 100% once-used French oak from a variety of high-end coopers for 18 months. We focused on elegance and balance during pressing and barrel aging. This wine was bottled aged 9 months before its release.
